Remembering the life of Dr. James M. Boyles

University of South Alabama Karate program is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. James M. Boyles on May 17, 2020. His dedication, enthusiasm and instruction have left an ongoing impact on the karate instructors and students. We offer our sincere condolences to his wife, Mary Ann, his family and friends. Dr. Boyles was an Emeritus Professor of Biology at the University of South Alabama, who helped get the University's Biology Department started in 1964, helped establish and directed the University's Shotokan Karate program until his retirement in September 1989. Hello Everyone, I hope these words find you and your loved ones safe, in good health, and strong spirit. Many of us have seen significant changes in our lives due to the Coronavirus pandemic. With change comes stress and pressures we are not accustomed. There are many ways people deal with challenges that can create stress. We have a unique opportunity through Martial Arts training that allows us to deal with these different levels of physical and mental stress. We should maintain balance through our knowledge and personal training of the martial arts. The mind and body should both be continually exercised. New State of Mind

As we begin Phase One of the COVID-19 recovery process, no doubt there are feelings of trepidation, uncertainty and unfamiliarity. Even day-to-day activities that were once so second nature now feel somewhat alien to many. This may apply to all aspects of our lives. Life during and after COVID-19 will never be the same. While very carefully and very gradually getting life back to "normal," this can all be looked at in a positive way. Things we have possibly taken for granted may be appreciated much more and also seen in a new and fresh way. This applies to Karate-Do in that while many have continued training at home on one's own, training in online classes, or possibly choose to train safely
